Disney is on a bit of a nostalgia trip at the moment, having already remade Dumbo, Aladdin and The Jungle Book, with The Lion King coming this month and The Little Mermaid and Cruella in the works. It’s a smart strategy – the generation that grew up on these Disney classics is now adult, and ready to introduce their kids to the stories they know and love.
Let’s get down to business. The trailer starts with beautiful shots of Mulan’s rural Chinese village, before establishing Mulan’s arranged marriage to ‘an auspicious match’.
The trailer goes on to show Mulan training with a bow and arrow, and with a sword, before pitching her into full battle mode to give us a taste of what’s to come.
As this trailer is a teaser it’s only giving so much away, but it’s been reported that Mulan will deviate from the animated film. The remake is said to take large influence from the original 6th Century poem “The Ballad of Mulan”, which inspired the book that inspired the original film.
Mulan is played by Chinese-American actress Yifei Liu, whose previous credits include a raft of romantic and action films.
It’s been reported that this version of the story will feature no dragons (sorry Eddie Murphy) and no songs, so this may be you may not get another chance to hear the belting I’ll make a man out of you again. Mulan is released in May 2020, so you’ve got plenty of time to enjoy before it becomes the ‘old’ Mulan
